Termite Awareness

Termites SWFL Cape Coral

Termites 101

Every year termites cause more than $30 billion worth of damage in the United States, leaving homeowners with repair costs that average around $3,000. How can you help minimize termite damage? Start by learning more about the creatures themselves

Southwest Florida Termite Control ServicesPreventive Tips

Termites live in colonies that can total from several hundred to several million individuals, and devour cellulose-based items such as wood, plant debris, insulation and paper. An average-sized termite community can gobble up to 5 grams of wood per day. That’s a lot of damage for an insect only 6-9 mm long.

Here are some specific ways to help avoid termite damage in your home:

  • Use termite-resistant concrete, steel or masonry in your home’s foundation.
  • When beginning new construction, especially in termite-heavy parts of the country, use embedded physical barriers such as poisoned plastics or other physical barriers to ensure that there are no easy ways for the insects to gain entry.
  • Treat at-risk timber with the appropriate chemicals.
  • If possible, use timber that’s naturally resistant to termites; species include turpentine tree, tea tree or white cypress.
  • Periodically monitor your home’s roof vents, siding, foundations and windows. Fine cracks as small as the width of a dime can be all the invitation termites need to make your house their home.
  • Look for inadequate ground clearance between the earth surrounding your home and the siding. Too small a distance could result in a termite infestation, and any wood-to-ground contact provides an easy meal for termites.

Look for the Signs

Performing periodic checks to find any of the following warning signs of termite infestation can help diagnose an infestation in its early stages:

  • Termite nests appear as a mud-like deposits that form in irregular lines outside of your home, particularly in the vicinity of wood.
  • Wood affected by termites can look whole at a glance, but in reality it may only be a veneer-hiding exterior that crumbles easily or sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Infested wood under painted surfaces may result in peeling and cracking paint or actual holes in the wood itself.
  • Termites gather at light sources in nighttime hours. This may be an indication that termites are looking to colonize nearby, especially in their most active times between March and November.

When is Termite Season Anyway?

Termites in SWFL

When Does Termite Season Start?

Termite season does not have a set beginning and end, as termites are active year round. The season when termites are most visible – through swarms, discarded wings and droppings – coincides roughly with the Major League Baseball season (March to November).

In warmer climates, termites remain consistently active year round. In cooler climates, termites typically are less active during the winter months (November – February). While termites in these areas may slow down during the holidays, their continued activity means that they can cause damage at any time.

Termite Prevention SWFLHow Long Is Termite Season?

The period of time termites are visible depends on where you live. Subterranean termites do not forage for food when the soil is too hot or cold. Depending on which U.S. state you call home, you may experience moderate temperatures for a few months a year – or almost all of the year.

The weather is not the only factor impacting activity. Termite activity also depends on the degree of shelter a colony receives in its nest. Drywood termites located inside a warm home are not as exposed to temperature variations, so seasonal weather changes will not impact them as much. Similarly, subterranean termites may create nests up to 18 inches below ground and away from the cool air, or forage in more protected areas of their nest during the winter. So they are often tucked away from cooler weather and are protected. Any temperature that is somewhat regulated, can provide a perfect place for termites.

When Does Termite Season End?

While termites typically are not visible year round, they can damage your house any month of the year. Regardless of the season or the outside temperature, if you see signs of termite infestation, contact your pest control professional. A trained Termite specialist knows what to look for even in the “off season” of Termites. It is always better to have your home checked periodically, than have to repair costly Termite damage. As you can see from the map below, termite risk is very high in the Florida panhandle.

Tips to Prevent Subterranean Termites

  • Prevent mulch from piling up against the home’s exterior. Mulch beds are generally areas of high moisture, and some mulch can serve as a primary food source. When using mulch, keep a barrier of at least several inches around the home.
  • Remove scrap lumber, boxes, old books and newspapers from crawl spaces. They are edible and may entice termites.
  • Maintain ventilation in crawl spaces. If not, they become ideal nesting sites for termites and other pests.
  • Have your home inspected by a professional at least once a year. Prompt treatment and regular inspections may save thousands of dollars in damage repair.

Termite Solutions Fort MyersFlorida species of Termites

Subterranean termites: The most destructive type, these bugs live in underground colonies and nests can contain more than 1 million termites. To travel above ground, they build dirt-like tunnels to shield them from predators and the weather. Inside a home, they will devour wood, furniture, drywall and even books.

Formosan termites: A non-native species, they arrived on warships returning from World War II. Infestations include Florida and 10 other states so far. They also live underground, but their colonies are much larger, often with millions. Because of their extreme size, Formosan colonies can cause more damage in a shorter period of time.

Drywood termites: Unlike their cousins, they don’t nest in the soil or build “shelter tubes.” They establish small colonies in dry, sound wood. As drywood termites eat, they produce small fecal pellets that look like sawdust around the home.

Termites: How to Reduce Your Home’s Risk of Infestation

termite swflTermites are the most economically important wood-destroying organism in the United States, with approximately $2 billion per year being spent for their prevention and treatment. This high-dollar amount could be reduced if homeowners implemented a number of relatively simple, inexpensive, practical measures around their home and outlying structures that reduce the risk of subterranean termite infestations. Such preventive measures are very cost-effective given that a home typically represents one’s largest monetary investment.

Many construction and landscaping features literally can invite termites into one’s home. An awareness of basic termite biology and habits can help you understand the necessity of certain prevention measures. The goal is to recognize and alter conditions around one’s home so as to reduce the termites’ environmental requirements for moisture, food (wood), and shelter.

Termite Biology and Habits

subterranean termite Bonita SpringsIn many parts of the United States, subterranean termites are the most common type of termites that infest homes. These termites need moisture to survive. They are closely associated with the soil, where they typically construct an underground nest or a series of interconnected nests, hence the name “subterranean termites.” The termites excavate narrow tunnels through the soil, creating a network through which they can travel very long distances (hundreds of feet or more) to reach food. They also transport soil above ground to construct mud tubes (shelter tubes) and to line their feeding galleries in wood. Soil serves as a source of moisture that helps protect termites from the drying effects of air. It also shields termites from predators (ants, birds, lizards, etc.) that feed on them.

Cellulose (especially wood) is the main food source for subterranean termites. In nature, termites feed on dead wood, including roots and stumps. Around homes, termites readily feed on wood mulch used in landscaping. However, any type of mulch provides termites with needed moisture and protection from the elements. In homes, termites often first attack wood that is located close to the soil (i.e., lower parts of the house). They then can follow the framework of the house to gain access to upper levels and floors. As they feed, they excavate galleries in the wood. Termites also can tunnel through inedible materials such as foam insulation, plaster board, etc. as they search for food.

Termite Solutions Bonita Springs

Do not unknowingly invite termites into your home!

Employ any of the following measures to help disrupt the termites’ ability to locate moisture, food (wood), and shelter.

Solutions to Termite-Conducive Situations

Problem: Cellulose (wood, dead plant material, paper, etc.) in contact with soil provides termites with ready and unobservable access to food.

Solutions:

  • Keep all wooden parts of the house foundation at least 6 inches above the soil.
  • Keep mulch levels several inches below the siding and wooden parts of the structure.
  • Avoid or minimize use of wood mulch next to the foundation.
  • Remove dead trees, stumps, and roots near the structure.
  • Never store firewood, lumber, or paper against the foundation or in the crawl space.
  • Remove wood debris and form boards.

Problem: Moisture accumulation near the foundation provides water needed for termite survival.

Solutions:

  • Grade or slope soil away from the foundation.
  • Divert rain water away from the foundation.
  • Maintain clean gutters and down-spouts.
  • Install down-spout extenders and splash blocks.
  • Use drain tiles if site is flat.
  • Divert lawn sprinklers and irrigation water away from the foundation.
  • Promptly repair leaking faucets, water pipes, and air conditioning units.
  • Use mulch sparingly (no more than 2 inches depth is recommended).
  • Keep plants and ground covers 3-4 feet away from the house foundation.

Problem: Poor ventilation in crawl space provides water needed for termite survival.

Solutions:

  • Cover approximately 75 percent of the soil surface in the crawl space with a vapor barrier (4-6 ml polyethylene sheeting).
  • Install 1 square foot of vent opening per 300 to 500 square feet of crawl space area (when using a vapor barrier).
  • Install 1 square foot of vent opening per 150 square feet of crawl space area (without a vapor barrier).
  • Enhance cross ventilation.
  • Remove any vegetation covering vents.

Problem: Hidden termite access.

Solutions:

  • Install trellises and trim plants so that they do not contact the house.
  • Do not build flower planters against the house.
  • Regularly inspect cracks or joints in concrete slabs for evidence of termites.
  • Install metal flashing when attaching porches or decks (even when using “treated” lumber) to an existing house.
  • Remove mulch that contacts siding or obscures a clear view of the foundation.
  • Never install foam board insulation (polystyrene) below grade.

Annual Inspection Checklist

  • Water is directed away from the foundation.
  • Wood and other cellulose materials (including mulch) are away from the foundation.
  • The foundation is exposed around the entire house.
  • The basement (or crawl space) is relatively dry.
