10 Pest Control Tips to Keep Pests Away

Nothing ruins a picnic like a line of ants. Nothing ruins a barbecue like a swarm of mosquitoes. And nothing ruins a morning like spotting a spider, cockroach, or mouse somewhere in your house.

Keep bugs and critters away from your home and yard with these 10 best pest control practices.

1. Block Their Entry to Your Home
Your first line of defense is to make it difficult for pests to even find an entry to your home. Check all your screens for holes, and repair if you find any. Check around your doors and windows for gaps, and replace window stripping when needed.

2. Clean Your Kitchen
A pile of crumbs on your counter or floor is like a treasure chest to ants and other insects. Let them find treasure elsewhere – outside and far away from your home – by making sure you offer no treasure to be found in your own kitchen. Wipe your counters, sweep your floors, put food away immediately, and take out the trash regularly.

3. Get Rid of Standing Water
Getting rid of standing water is the first step to control mosquitoes. Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and a big, fat invitation for mosquitoes to start a family. It’s easy to miss standing water sometimes, so regularly walk your property to check for it. Look in rain spouts, check for leaks near your air conditioning unit, and pick up toys left scattered throughout the yard.

4. Maintain Your Yard
Keep your landscaping maintained to avoid overgrowth that is perfect for pests and their nests. Trim bushes and trees that are near the house, rake up debris, and yes – you’re also going to have to weed.

5. Eat Your Fruits and Veggies

Don’t let fruits and veggies get overly ripe on your counter. If you do, the fruit flies will invite themselves in for a spell and eliminating fruit flies is a headache you don’t want.

6. Store Your Firewood Properly
Don’t give termites free access to your home. If you store firewood, keep it away from your house or shed. As far away as possible, actually. Five feet should be the minimum distance, but if you can store it even farther away, you’ll be in better shape. Also, store it in racks above the ground.

7. Don’t Throw Meat Outside Too Soon

Try not to throw meat scraps in your outside garbage unless the garbage will be picked up in the next 48 hours or so. The combination of rotting meat and summer sun could bring unwanted pests to your yard alarmingly fast.

8. Inspect Swings and Outdoor Furniture
Regularly check the chains and corners of your swing sets and outdoor furniture for spider webs and egg sacks. Remove them when you see them.

9. Don’t Bring the Outside In
Keep outside toys outside and inside toys inside. If you have to bring in a toy, chair, or table, thoroughly wipe it down first.

10. Use a Pest Control Service
Hire a local pest control service to come to your home and regularly spray for bugs and rodents common to your area. A professional pest control company can provide more protection than you can on your own, and the peace of mind you’ll receive knowing you have an expert protecting your home is immeasurable.

While there are a lot of things you can do to try and prevent pests around your home, sometimes you just need to bring in the pros. Whether you choose to do it all on your own or hire a professional pest control service, though, keep these tips in mind to take control of your yard again and have a more pest-free summer!

Keeping Away the Spiders!

House Spider Prevention Tips

9 Natural Tips  To Keeping Spiders Out Of Your Home

If you’re one of those people that jumps at the sight of a spider, this blog post is for you. We love sharing the good stuff and we hope you like this one!

Even though most spiders are completely harmless and more afraid of us than we are of them they aren’t something we want to share our personal living space with at all! So we looked around for some easy ways to help you keep them creepy crawly ugly spiders away from you and your family. If these natural remedies don’t work for you or you don’t have time to spray vinegar or peppermint all over your house just give us a call at 239-443-7219 and we’ll take care of the spider problem for you!

1 peppermint-oil for spidersMint Them Out

Did you know that spiders HATE peppermint? Most people don’t! An easy way to keep spiders from invading your space is to fill a spray bottle with peppermint essential oil and water, and then spray it around your home. Plus, your home will smell great!!

Clean It Up

The cheapest and most organic way to repel spiders naturally is probably not the easiest! Keeping your home neat, tidy and free of dust or webs is the best way to keep spiders from moving in. Regular vacuuming, dusting, and de-cluttering will keep any insects from making themselves at home!

Use Vinegar

White vinegar has about five trillion uses around the house (look it up!), and repelling spiders is one of them! Repelling spiders with vinegar is much like repelling them with peppermint oil, in that you fill a spray bottle with vinegar and water, and spray all the cracks and crevices around your home. (The smell goes away as soon as it dries.)

Enlist The Help Of A Furry Friend

Cats are a great spider deterrent! Four legged furry friends can be great hunters and will definitely not let a spider crawl across the floor without going on the prowl and taking care of business!

Don’t Let Them In

A great way to keep spiders out of your home is to never let them in in the first place! Make sure the exterior of your home is free from leaves, grass clippings, wood piles, or any other notorious spider hangouts. You can also check all door openings and windowsills to make sure there isn’t room for spiders to get in that way,and apply caulk when needed.

1 lemon peel for spidersCitrus Does The Trick

It’s common knowledge that spiders hate all things citrus. Rubbing citrus peels on areas where spiders are known to frequent, like baseboards, windowsills and bookshelves, is a great way to keep them from coming around. Even using lemon scented furniture polish can drive spiders away!

Let Cedar Do The Work

Cedar can be a great deterrent for spiders. You can use cedar mulch outside around the perimeter of your home to try to keep spiders from ever getting inside. If you have access to a cedar chest or cedar hangers to use in your closet, that is a good choice as well. Using cedar blocks or shavings inside closets, cupboards or drawers can make them think twice about hanging out in there too!

Chestnuts

Yes, you read that right, chestnuts! They have been known to drive away spiders, so placing a few in your windowsills or along your baseboards can keep spiders from hanging out there. Many people also believe that the same thing can be done with an osage orange (also known as a hedgeapple) You can keep chestnuts and hedgeapples in the house for a long time before they go bad, so it’s worth giving it a shot!

Tobacco

It sounds weird, but spiders hate tobacco just about as much as they hate lemons and chestnuts! You can sprinkle small pieces of tobacco where spiders are troublesome, or you can soak tobacco in water and then spray the mixture all around. However, tobacco is pretty expensive these days, so you can likely find a more affordable fix for keeping spiders at bay! (you might not want to use this option if you have pets)

#10 on our list is a bonus tip – Call the experts at Lenny’s Pest Control and as about our Perimeter Pest Control Service. We’ll make sure you don’t have to worry about spiders, ants or any other kinds of bugs in and around your home!

Green Pest Control Tips for Earth Day!

Earth Day 2014

Pest Control Fort MyersAs you might already know Earth Day is just around the corner – April 22nd. As you also might know we’re all about sharing valuable information and important tips to help you have a bug free living space so this month we thought it a good idea to bring you some Environmentally Friendly and Natural Pest Control Tips. Even though unwanted pest, bugs and rodents are a natural part of our earthly environment we don’t necessarily need to share the same living space with them. The most obvious and simple pest control tip we can offer is to keep your living space clean – bugs love dirty, sticky, icky, grimy and sweet.

Below you will find six helpful tips to help you Go Green and get bug free at the same time. Please remember that we are always here for you if you don’t have time or feel overwhelmed with these options. Sometimes the job is too big to do it yourself so you need to call the experts in – that’s when we can help! Our team of certified and trained exterminators can protect your home, lawn or office from pest, bugs, rodents, bed bugs, grubs, ants, termites, whiteflies and so much more!

6 Tips for Natural Pest Control

Natural pest control is safer, and often more effective, than chemical pesticides at managing the ants, flies, cockroaches and other insects that want to share your home. Most pesticides to control insect pests are poisons that you don’t want around your body, your children or your pets. Worst of all, they tend to linger in the environment long after they’ve been sprayed. Before you reach for the poison, try these tips for safe, natural insect control — most of which are based on the principles of integrated pest management, or IPM.

Pest Control Tips Lee CountyAn Ounce of Prevention

The best way to control pests is to not invite them inside in the first place. Most bugs are attracted to food and water, so keeping your kitchen clean, taking out the garbage regularly, and storing food and drinks in tight containers will deter insects, mice and other pests. Leaky pipes and other sources of water attract cockroaches and other bugs, as does a full bowl of pet food. Finally, repair or replace torn screens, and seal off drafty doorways (which also saves on heating and cooling costs).

Natural Insect Control: Know Your Pests

The word “bugs” is a general term that could describe any insect or spider — but not all bugs are created equal. Before you take any steps to control pests, you need to know exactly what problem you have. Many non-toxic treatments, like borax or diatomaceous earth, will work on some pests but not others.

Why Use Chemicals?

For some pest infestations, non-chemical natural insect control can be effective — and is often less expensive, too. An ordinary fly swatter is a very green way to eliminate flies and other bugs. Vacuuming is another great strategy for getting rid of pests that may live in your carpet or upholstery (they usually suffocate inside the bags). And traps — like light traps, fly paper, bait traps or pheromone traps — can get rid of bugs and rodents without spreading around any household chemicals.

Insect control Cape CoralGo Non-Toxic First

If the pest prevention and elimination ideas above aren’t enough, first try non-toxic agents for natural insect control. Soap, for example, has been used successfully against dozens of different pests for years — about 2 teaspoons of castile soap in a gallon of water will deter most ant infestations, as will cayenne pepper and oil of eucalyptus. Boric acid (borax) is another great, safe way to get rid of roaches, ants and silverfish. Try mixing sugar with boric acid, and you can get rid of a whole colony of insects. Diatomaceous earth can wipe out fleas. Whichever you choose, use it in targeted areas — not only is this safer, it’s more cost-effective than random distribution.

Choose Safer Pesticides

If you decide it’s time to bring out the big guns and use some commercial pesticides, there are choices that are lower in toxins than others. Plant-based pesticides containing pyrethins, for example, aren’t exactly “safe,” but they are a better choice than organophosphates, which are found in some pet products. Avoid anything listed as containing chlorpyrifos, phosmet, naled, diazinon or malathion. And don’t get fooled by ad slogans like “natural,” “eco-friendly,” or “environmentally safe.” Those phrases aren’t regulated and mean nothing (after all, even natural poison is still poison).

Use Pesticides Smartly

Whatever product you’re using, use common sense and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep your use of any pesticide to a bare minimum, and avoid aerial sprays and foggers except as a last resort. Don’t use outdoor or garden pesticides indoors, and when you store and dispose of pesticides, do so in a safe, smart and legal manner — because they’re hazardous waste, don’t just throw them in the trash.

Amazing Roach Facts

Run for Your Lives!

The world’s largest roach (which lives in South America) is six inches long with a one-foot wingspan.

Roach extermination Cape Coral FLRoaches By the Numbers

6 — Number of legs on a cockroach

18 — Number of knees on most cockroaches (at least!)

40– Number of minutes cockroaches can hold their breath

75 — Percentage of time that cockroaches spend just resting (how lazy can you get?)

5,000 — Number of species of cockroaches worldwide

280 million+ — Years ago that cockroaches are thought to have originated (during the Carboniferous era)

Bad News

Some female cockroaches mate once and are pregnant for the rest of their lives (bummer).

The Legend of the Headless Cockroach

A cockroach can live a week without its head. The roach only dies because without a mouth, it can’t drink water and dies of thirst.

Wanna Race?

Cockroaches can run up to three miles in an hour. (Hey, it’s no marathon, but it’s not bad.)

Better Check Those Cracks in the Wall

Young cockroaches need only a crack as thin as a dime (about .5mm wide) to crawl into. Adult males can squeeze into a space of 1.6mm or the thickness of a quarter. Pregnant females need the most space to hide: 4.5mm or a space as tall as two stacked nickels.

Little Hearts

A cockroach heart is nothing but a simple tube with valves. The tube can pump blood backwards and forwards in the insect. The heart can even stop moving without harming the roach.

If these facts aren’t enough to satisfy you (you must really want to impress your friends)

Thirsty Critters

Roaches can live without food for a month, but will only survive a week without water.

When Cold, Roaches Snuggle

Most species of roaches live in the tropics. But roaches live all over the world, including the North and South Poles. Pest cockroaches can withstand temperatures as cold as 32°F (0°C), but will die if the temperature goes much below that. In extremely cold places, however, they survive by moving in with humans. (Hey, quit hogging the covers!)

Better Than Air Jordans!

Cockroaches can climb walls because they are equipped with a set of little claws on their feet designed for that very purpose.

Crushed-Roach Bandages?

Crushed cockroaches can be applied to a stinging wound to help relieve the pain.

Smell You Later

Sniff, sniff…oh, it’s just Uncle Leo. Roaches use their feelers, or antennae, as noses. Their sense of smell is so great, they recognize family and friends by their distinctive odors.

Roach Perfume

Female roaches attract male roaches by producing pheromones. Pheromones are chemicals that make the female roach smell REALLY good to the male roach.

Alright Kids, Beat It!

Some female cockroaches incubate their egg cases in their bodies until they are ready to hatch. These babies stay with their mothers a day or two after they are born.

Yuck!

Male cockroaches transfer sperm to females in a “gift-wrapped” package called a spermatophore. Some males cover the package in a protein-rich wrapping that the female can eat to obtain nutrients to raise her young. Delicious!

Whitefly Protection in SWFL

white fly cape coral

The Whitefly

whitefly on hibiscusWhiteflies have become a major issue in Southwest Florida with at least four species of particular concern: Ficus, Rugose Spiraling, Bondar’s Nesting and Silverleaf. Residents have noticed plant leaves yellowing, dropping, covered with white waxy material called flocculent, or covered with whitefly excrement called honeydew and its accompanying sooty mold. Plants, walkways, cars, outdoor furniture and even pools may become covered with the sticky material or flocculent. Whiteflies are among the many pests that are part of living in a subtropical climate.

They can be managed with proper plant cultural practices; use of other beneficial insects, mites and fungi; and judicious application of the appropriate pesticides. A chronic problem in greenhouses, whiteflies can also become serious pests during the sultry days of late summer. These sucking insects often appear suddenly, and quickly weaken plants with their constant feeding. Whiteflies are most serious in warm climates where they can survive winter.

What Are Whiteflies?

Small, soft-bodied sucking insects, whiteflies look like tiny white triangles, less than one-tenth inch long, when resting on the undersides of plants. Feeding is concentrated on leaf undersides, where whiteflies remove so much plant sap that the plants are seriously weakened. Many species of whitefly feed on ornamental plants, but only one or two are likely to cause problems in the vegetable garden. Whiteflies are most likely to cause problems on okra, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and sweet potatoes grown in warm climates. In some areas, whiteflies also damage cucumber and cabbage-family crops.

Whitefly damageWhat Whitefly Damage Looks Like

Pale, wilting leaves are a sign that whiteflies are sucking juices from leaf undersides. As you approach infested plants to inspect the lower sides of wilted leaves, hundreds of tiny white moths take to the air in a cloud. If the whiteflies have been feeding for several days, the leaves may have a sticky substance (whitefly honeydew) and ants may be present as honeydew consumers.

Whitefly Life Cycle

Whiteflies are greenhouse pests in all climates, but they are serious vegetable garden pests mostly in mild winter climates that permit their winter survival. When adult females find suitable host plants, they feed on leaf undersides and lay eggs there. A female may lay 200 to 400 eggs without moving from a plant. Upon hatching, the nearly invisibly small crawlers find a place to feed and insert their sucking mouthparts. Feeding continues for up to three weeks, when nymphs pupate into adults. Frequently problems are not noticed until a 30-day generation has passed, and a population has successfully flourished in the garden.

We’re always on the lookout for DID YOU KNOW? Nature’s Houdini: A house mouse can squeeze through a hole the diameter of a dime. Did you know that mice turn up their noses at peppermint? Or that ants and roaches hate Tex-Mex? Some easy tricks and common household ingredients can help keep nature’s nuisances at bay, without harming kids, pets or other wildlife.

Be a Menace to Mice

  • Peppermint has been an anti-mouse strategy for centuries. Some swear the strong smell keeps mice from being able to find food. Soak cotton balls in pure peppermint oil (found in health-food stores) and place in small cups near their entry points. Planting peppermint in your yard may help too.
  • No cat? Borrow some cat hair from a friend or a groomer, and place it around holes.
  • Better yet, block those holes altogether. Stuff them with copper mesh, which won’t rust like steel wool. Cover larger openings and the space behind air vents with hardware cloth that has a mesh size less than a quarter-inch.

Ant problem SWFLKeep Ants Far Away

  • Ants depend on their scent trail: Wipe it out with undiluted white vinegar.
  • They also avoid cayenne pepper. Other pests, including cockroaches and squirrels, avoid it too.
  • Ants can’t digest cornmeal, but they don’t know that. Put piles of it near a problem anthill, and ants will eat it and slowly starve. This solution takes some time, but it’s safe for kids and pets.

Banish Biting Bugs

  • Mosquitoes track you by the carbon dioxide you exhale. Mask it with citronella. Lemongrass (not the citronella plant) is the source of this oil. Plant this lovely ornamental around your patio or in portable pots.
  • Bedbugs don’t like extremes. Chill a room at 32°F or below for several days to stop these pests cold. And wash and dry bedding at the hottest settings for at least 15 minutes. You can also set the legs of your bed in plastic cups filled with a little mineral oil, to keep bugs from climbing up.
  • Many insects go toward the light. But bugs avoid yellow bug lights—use them near doorways, driveways and sidewalks. Place mercury vapor or incandescent lights around the perimeter of the property to lure insects away.

What’s Bugging You This Holiday Season?

Is an army of ants marching toward the cookie jar on your counter top or some sweet prize in your pantry? Are ants threatening to spoil your Holiday Happiness and Merry Joy? If fire ants plague your yard, lanai or patio and you’re tired of getting stung by the tiny attackers maybe it’s time to take greater measures and fight back! Lenny’s Pest Control is all about keeping you informed, educated and prepared to exterminate, eliminate and de-bug your home as effectively and efficiently as possible. Today we bring you some very interesting and hopefully helpful details on those dreaded house ants!

With over 12,000 species of ants in the world, only a small handful of them insist on invading our homes in search of something tasty from either the sweet foods or flesh and greasy foods. Ants commonly found indoors include the Argentine ant, the pharaoh ant, the thief or grease ant, the pavement ant and the odorous house ant. And if you’re really unlucky, you might have the carpenter ant, an ant insistent on destroying the wood that holds up your house, so get professional help fast in that case!

Getting rid of ants is never a simple proposition, despite their simple nature. Luckily for you, you’re trying to get rid of sugar ants, and they are probably the most simple-minded ant species. What do they eat? They eat sugar, sweets, and other scraps of food. This is why we call them sugar ants. Of course, the term sugar ant is actually a misnomer. The real Sugar Ant is a native of the Australian continent, and exclusive to that part of the world; you won’t find them here. The ants you’re probably having trouble with are Pavement Ants and Pharaoh Ants.

Little black ants have also garnered the name “sugar ant,” though their real name is, well, Little Black Ants. Not a lot is known about Little Black Ants, except that they eat just about anything (including other insects) and they really like rotting wood and dark spaces. Getting rid of little black ants, however, despite how little is known about them from a biological perspective, is as easy as getting rid of sugar ants. Sweet baits can be used to control little black ants indoors, and protein baits can be used to control little black ants outdoors. We have some recommendations below to help you in your battle against the ants but please remember that we’re here to help de-bug your home and make your Holidays a lot more joyous. Our experienced and knowledgeable pest control technicians know exactly what to look for and have all the right techniques to protect and exterminate your home from all unwanted bugs – including ants!

Here are just a few tips to help you keep the sugar ants, little black ants and any other kind of ants away from your kitchen this Holiday season.

  • Heed the scouts. The first signs of ants in your kitchen is a warning to you. These are the scout ants checking out your kitchen for signs of suitability to invade and their job will be to return back to the nest to inform the other ants that your kitchen is blooming with potential. Waste no time in getting to work cleaning your kitchen, sealing all food and removing all sources of sticky, sweet, greasy and flesh foods from their access.
  • Don’t have any dirty dishes left out. Wash all dishes as they’re used or place them into the dishwasher and shut the door tight. Wipe down all of your cupboard and bench-top surfaces with vinegar; this cleans, disinfects and leaves a nasty smell as far as ants are concerned. Remove all sources of garbage and keep the kitchen bin shut tightly. Rinse all recyclable containers before putting them into storage.
  • Sweep and vacuum the kitchen area daily.
  • Rinse off any jar, container or bottle that has a sticky or leftover residue. In particular, check jam/jelly jars, sauce bottles, pickle bottles, cordial bottles and honey and syrup containers. Place your honey jar and any other very ant-attractive foods inside a bowl of water (see How to keep ants out of honey and How to remove ants from cat food for more details.
  • Seal every food item in containers. The containers need to be of the sort that ants cannot get into. Be relentless about this for 3-7 days. The ants, having nothing to eat, will go elsewhere. This works because the ants are following the chemical trails left by other ants, who did find food.
  • You may also need to seal fragrant items such as cleaning powders, deodorants, and the like in case these attract the ants’ initial attention. Just be alert to any congregations around non-food sources.

Fire antsFor Fire ants you want to use a professional exterminator, such as Lenny’s Pest Control, specializing in their extermination. Fire ants in Southwest Florida rarely enter the home but if they do, get immediate help as they’re aggressive and their stings are painful and can trigger off an allergic reaction in susceptible people. This isn’t something you typically want to handle on your own.

Dealing with Carpenter ants is no laughing matter either. An invasion of carpenter ants in SWFL is serious as they can damage your house structure. Be alert for their invasion – piles of broken wings can be one sign and it is longer than most ants. You may also see their fecal pellets (these appear like sawdust) and they can sometimes be heard rustling in the walls. A professional pest control specialist will know exactly what and where to spray in order to get rid of every last one of these not so nice bugs!

Whether you currently have kitchen or patio ants or you want to protect your home against them, follow the tips included above and you’ll improve your chances of being ant free this winter. Lenny’s Pest Control is your trusted Ant and Bug Extermination expert in the Southwest Florida area – call us and we’ll take care of your kitchen ant right away!

Drought, heat bring spiders out

Heat driving brown recluses to seek refuge inside homes
By Danielle Dellorto CNN

Record high temperatures and rapid expanding drought across the country is resulting in an increase in spiders.

“All insects are cold-blooded, so in extreme heat they develop quicker, which results in more generations popping up now compared to previous summers,” said Jim Fredericks, an entomologist and wildlife ecology expert with the National Pest Management Association.

One spider to watch out for is arguably one of Mother Nature’s most dangerous, the brown recluse. The extreme heat is driving brown recluses to seek refuge inside homes.

Easily disguised as a common house spider, the venom from a brown recluse can cause irritation to the skin, lesions, and in rare cases, death.

“All spiders have a venomous bite, but only a few can be medically dangerous to humans, and the brown recluse is a top concern,” said Fredericks.

The brown recluse spider is smaller than you might imagine — about the size of a quarter. It’s tan in color and has a dark spot in the shape of a violin on its body.

You aren’t likely to see them roaming around during the day — like their name suggests, they are reclusive. They typically hide in dark corners of your home, or in stored items like boxes and in closets.

“A common misconception is that spiders like to bite people,” said Fredericks. “But they actually don’t recognize people as a food source, and will typically only bite as a defense mechanism.”

A bite from a brown recluse will be painless at first. Within three to eight hours, the bite site will become swollen, red, and tender to the touch. In 95% of cases, the irritation ends there and the bite will heal on its own without developing into a more serious irritation.

In some cases, however, the venom begins to break down the cells in the skin and progress into a necrotic lesion needing immediate medical attention. This process takes about two to three weeks.

“It is rare for a brown recluse to result in death, but it can occur in children or adults who are allergic to the spider’s venom,” said Fredericks. “It best to get medical attention right away if bitten, to make sure you aren’t allergic.”

Brown recluse spiders are generally concentrated in the midwestern and south-central regions of the United States.

Reduce your risk of being bitten by wearing long gloves if sorting through dark spaces in your home or moving boxes and furniture. Experts also recommend setting out glue boards (which can be purchased at your local home improvement store) to catch the spiders before they have an opportunity to bite.
