Whitefly Protection in SWFL

white fly cape coral

The Whitefly

whitefly on hibiscusWhiteflies have become a major issue in Southwest Florida with at least four species of particular concern: Ficus, Rugose Spiraling, Bondar’s Nesting and Silverleaf. Residents have noticed plant leaves yellowing, dropping, covered with white waxy material called flocculent, or covered with whitefly excrement called honeydew and its accompanying sooty mold. Plants, walkways, cars, outdoor furniture and even pools may become covered with the sticky material or flocculent. Whiteflies are among the many pests that are part of living in a subtropical climate.

They can be managed with proper plant cultural practices; use of other beneficial insects, mites and fungi; and judicious application of the appropriate pesticides. A chronic problem in greenhouses, whiteflies can also become serious pests during the sultry days of late summer. These sucking insects often appear suddenly, and quickly weaken plants with their constant feeding. Whiteflies are most serious in warm climates where they can survive winter.

What Are Whiteflies?

Small, soft-bodied sucking insects, whiteflies look like tiny white triangles, less than one-tenth inch long, when resting on the undersides of plants. Feeding is concentrated on leaf undersides, where whiteflies remove so much plant sap that the plants are seriously weakened. Many species of whitefly feed on ornamental plants, but only one or two are likely to cause problems in the vegetable garden. Whiteflies are most likely to cause problems on okra, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and sweet potatoes grown in warm climates. In some areas, whiteflies also damage cucumber and cabbage-family crops.

Whitefly damageWhat Whitefly Damage Looks Like

Pale, wilting leaves are a sign that whiteflies are sucking juices from leaf undersides. As you approach infested plants to inspect the lower sides of wilted leaves, hundreds of tiny white moths take to the air in a cloud. If the whiteflies have been feeding for several days, the leaves may have a sticky substance (whitefly honeydew) and ants may be present as honeydew consumers.

Whitefly Life Cycle

Whiteflies are greenhouse pests in all climates, but they are serious vegetable garden pests mostly in mild winter climates that permit their winter survival. When adult females find suitable host plants, they feed on leaf undersides and lay eggs there. A female may lay 200 to 400 eggs without moving from a plant. Upon hatching, the nearly invisibly small crawlers find a place to feed and insert their sucking mouthparts. Feeding continues for up to three weeks, when nymphs pupate into adults. Frequently problems are not noticed until a 30-day generation has passed, and a population has successfully flourished in the garden.

Small Whitefly Creates Big Mess in SWFL!

The Whitefly Epedemic in Southwest Florida

Lenny’s Pest Control of Southwest Florida is always on the lookout for way to keep your family and home safe and protected from unwanted pests, bugs, parasites, rodents, etc… When we heard about the Whitefly we immediately took on the task of getting educated on the subject and finding out what we needed to do to keep our trees protected. We took the necessary steps to become experts on how to exterminate, protect and prevent the whitefly from affecting our environment and we started offering this service to our clients. We’ve had very successful results and today we want to share some of that research with you. Please feel free to check out this FGCU fact sheet for more information.

whitefly infestation swflThe WHITEFLY: Recently, a new pest was reported attacking ficus trees and hedges in Florida. This pest was identified as the fig whitefly, Singhiella simplex, and is a new US continental record. Whiteflies are small, winged insects that belong to the Order Hemiptera which also includes aphids scales, mealybugs, and bugs. These insects typically feed on the underside of leaves with their “needle-like” mouthparts. Whiteflies can seriously injure host plants by sucking juices from them causing wilting, yellowing, stunting, leaf drop, or even death.

Whiteflies have become a major issue in Southwest Florida with at least four species of particular concern: Ficus, Rugose Spiraling, Bondar’s Nesting and Silverleaf. They can be managed with proper plant cultural practices; use of other beneficial insects, mites and fungi; and judicious application of the appropriate pesticides.

white-fly Lee CountyRecommendations: We recommend that you monitor your ficus plants for early signs of an infestation because it will be easier to manage the pest before it builds to high populations and causes major damage. If the foliage is disturbed the small, white gnat-like adult whiteflies can be seen flying from the foliage.  The adult whitefly resembles a very small moth with a yellow body and white wings with a faint grey band in the middle of the wings.   Immature stages (eggs and nymphs) can be found primarily on the underside of the leaves. Prior to adult emergence, the nymphs are tan to light green discs with red eyes.  The underside of infested leaves look like they are dotted with small, silver or white spots which are actually the empty “skin” of the pupae after the adult emerges.  Also, if infested trees or hedges are trimmed, either leave the clippings on the property or if removing, bag the clippings to reduce the chance of spreading the insects.  If clippings are being transported in a truck, be sure to either bag them or cover these clippings with a tarp.

whitefly problem cape coral fl

Although your ficus tree or hedge may appear to be dying after losing most of it leaves, it may still be alive.  If the twigs are still supple, the plant will produce new leaves in a few weeks.  As soon as new growth is evident, a systemic insecticide applied to the soil may provide protection to the new growth. If you do see signs of the Whitefly in your yard please give us a call at 239-945-6543 to get your trees protected immediately.

The Whitefly Damage:  The leaves of ficus trees infested with whiteflies begin to turn yellow before the leaves are dropped from the plant. Ficus trees without their leaves are one of the most obvious symptoms of a whitefly infestation. This whitefly has been most commonly found infesting weeping fig (Ficus benjamina) but has also been seen on F. altissima, F. bengalensis (also called “banyan tree”), F. microcarpa, and F. maclellandii. Weeping figs are commonly used as hedges but also grow as trees. Other hosts include the strangler fig (F. aurea), Cuban laurel (F. microcarpa), fiddle-leaf fig (F. lyrata) and banana-leaf fig (F. macllandii). This whitefly may eventually be found on other species of ficus. Azalea has also been listed as a host plant.

Healthy Lawn Care Tips

Since it’s Spring time – we’ve been talking about lawns lately. Now we all know “A beautiful lawn doesn’t happen by itself.” This is definitely something we have to work toward. Just like anything else, your lawn needs some regular attention and TLC (tender loving care). Having a beautiful lawn in Southwest Florida isn’t as difficult or complicated as some people think. This is where Lenny’s Pest Control comes in – we’re here to help you reach your goal of a beautiful, healthy, lush Southwest Florida lawn! Keep reading for some great Lawn Care Tips we’ve put together just for you!

Our lawn care specialist will take the time to inspect your lawn and identify the current problems.  We always take time to answer all your questions and educate you about what needs to be done for your lawn. Our lawn care program includes Weed Control, Fertilization and Turf Insect Control. We have a special going on right now – Spring Lawn Special – our initial lawn care service is only $29.95 and it covers up to 6000 sq. ft. with annual agreement – for new customers only.

Here are a few simple tips for Floridians who want to make sure that the grass is always greener in their lawn. Remember, your lawn is the first thing people see when they visit your home. Having a beautiful house is pointless without a lawn that matches. In Florida, the most common type of grass is St. Augustine Grass because it flourishes in hot and humid climates.

AERATING – Aerating your yard once or twice per year is an easy way to ensure that your lawn stays healthy. Aerating is simply poking small holes all across your lawn so water has a place to drain and so that the small life forms within the grass get some fresh air. Aerating tools can be purchased at most hardware stores but a sharp point on any garden tool will work fine.

WATER – We all know watering your lawn is important and essential. Without water your lawn will surely wither up and die. Watering in the early morning or late evening when temperatures and wind speeds are the lowest will reduce water loss through evaporation. Check with your local water management to find out about water restrictions but normally in the Southwest Florida areas you can water twice a week and the recommended irrigation times average about 30 to 45 minutes. You might want to lower this during high rainfall seasons.

MOWING – The higher the grass, the more extensive the root system becomes. Grass with deeper roots is more drought-resistant. If the grass is mowed very short, it will put most of its energy into growing new leaf blades, and less energy into growing a root system (root system will be shallow). So don’t mow your lawn too short.

Lenny’s Pest Control is all about educating you and helping you protect your home and space from unwanted, bugs and pests. We would love to come out to your home or business and inspect your property, give you an estimate and get your protected. Please give us a call at (239) 945-6543 for all your pest control needs in southwest Florida.

Southwest Florida Lawn Care

“A beautiful lawn doesn’t happen by itself.” I know you’ve heard it before but it’s definitely worth repeating. One of the benefits of living in this paradise we call Southwest Florida is having a beautiful lawn outside your home all year-long! Now what most people don’t realize is what it takes to create and keep a beautiful lawn and it’s not as complicated or difficult as some may say it is.

Lenny’s Pest Control has been helping homeowners enjoy a year-long beautiful lawn for years and we know exactly how to get the job done right the first time. Our lawn care specialist will take the time to inspect your lawn and identify the current problems.  We always take time to answer all your questions and educate you about what needs to be done for your lawn. Our lawn care program includes Weed Control, Fertilization and Turf Insect Control. We have a special going on this Spring – our initial lawn care service is only $29.95 and it covers up to 6000 sq. ft. with annual agreement – for new customers only.

INSECT CONTROL – If your turf looks damaged, wilted, and water-starved, than in insect may be involved. Some insect species feed on the roots  and actually detach the blades from the roots and some suck the grass blades. This can cause great damage that turns your turf brown.  Here’s a list of insect you might have living in your lawn now: ants, chinch bugs, fire ants, grubs, chiggers, ticks, cutworms, sod webworms, greenbug and billbugs are just a few. Our Turf Insect Control treatment can help you have a healthier, greener lawn quicker than you think!

FERTILIZATION – Providing sufficient nutrients, or fertilizer, is a key component of any beautiful and healthy lawn in southwest Florida.  Aside from enjoying the nice view outside your window, a healthy lawn helps cool the environment and improve air quality! With an extensive knowledge of fertilizing methods and an experienced and expert landscaping team dedicated to you lawn’s health, Lenny’s Pest Control has the tools to rejuvenate even the most dilapidated and dry lawns.

WEED CONTROL – The last thing your lawn needs is a bunch of weeds crowding out your grass. Weeds detract from the beauty of lawns due to the contrast in color and texture between the desired grass plants and the weeds. In addition, weeds compete with the desired grass plants for available water and nutrients, usually resulting in thinning of desirable plant cover. Don’t let weeds keep you from enjoying your lawn, call the experts at Lenny’s Pest Control for quick, quality lawn care.

LAWN TIPS – To decrease bug and disease pressures, mow at the proper height and don’t overwater your lawn. Taller grass has deeper, stronger roots. A short mowing height stresses out grass, and over-fertilization causes it to grow faster than grass clippings can break down.

This results in a layer of thatch and creates hiding places for detrimental insects. Thatch blocks water traveling to the roots, requiring increased irrigation. In turn, damp conditions create disease or fungus pressure, which requires spraying with a fungicide that eliminates all fungus, including the beneficial fungi that protect grass. The cycle continues if unchecked. The best way to have a beautiful lawn is to call an expert and them get you on a plan to a healthier, greener lawn!

Is Your Lawn Protected?

Are you in LOVE with your Lawn? Well you should be!

At Lenny’s Pest Control we believe you should have the best looking lawn on the block! If you’re living in Southwest FL then you’re already in paradise, shouldn’t your home and it’s surroundings look the part? This is the time of year when we reach out to our customers and remind them that it’s GRUB season and their lawn needs to be protected if they want to have and keep a beautiful green, lush, healthy lawn. Most people don’t realize that beautiful lawns don’t happen on their own. Aside from needing water on a regular basis, lawns need to be fertilized in the fall and protected against insects and bugs like GRUBS and NOW is the perfect time to do so. You also need to make sure that you keep those weeds in check because they can really do some damage to your lawn as well as shrubs and plants.

Today we want to educate you on those pesky and problematic GRUBS!

Grubs are the larval stage of beetles. There are many types of grubs but the ones which live in the dirt under grass are most likely Japanese Beetle, June Beetle, May Beetle, Black Turfgrass, Asiatic Garden or some other regional beetle which lays eggs whose larva feed on plants. Most people know what grubs look like. They usually have an off white, tan or even brown head, tend to be curled in a “C” position all the time, have lots of legs and a segmented body which is quite white. Grubs can vary greatly in size which is not only dependent on species. Clearly the food supply has a lot to do with just how big or small any one grub might grow. Other variables like temperature, humidity, water, local nutrients and soil type will influence their size and development. Grubs live just under grass, usually 6 inches to a few feet down, all of which depends on their species, food supplies and the time of year. Since so many insects generate a grub like young which can live in turf.

Grubs usually go unnoticed until the results of their feeding is observed. Such results will include dead grass, plants and flowers. It is quite common to find them still feeding even as you are removing the dead plant, turf or flower!!  Such “pockets” of grubs should be more then just an alarm alerting you to what is happening. Don’t ignore it. Grub damage is by far the most common type of damage sustained in turf grass throughout the United States. In addition to grubs killing off plants, shrubs and grass, their presence tends to attract all kinds of  animals. Moles, armadillo, badgers, birds, mice, rats,  voles, shrews, gophers, groundhogs, muskrat, opossum,  raccoon, prairie dogs, and skunk are just some of the animals which will readily tear up and pull apart lawns in an effort to find grubs. They love grubs
and lawns which have active grub populations will undoubtedly start to experience animal digging and damage. If you already have this activity, you need to put an
end to it as soon as possible. Turf which is in a weakened state already will quickly die off from all the digging. Grub infestations can also lead to other insect problems. There are many types of wasps which actually feed on grubs. These parasitic wasps thrive in yards where grubs are present and will come to feed and nest when large grub populations
are active.

Fall is the best time to inspect for grubs, although early spring can also bring on early infestations. At these times the grubs are near the soil surface feeding at the root zone. Use a spade to cut three sides of a strip one foot square and three inches deep. Force the spade under the sod and lay it back, using the uncut side as a hinge. Use a trowel to dislodge soil from the exposed roots. After inspection, replace the strip of sod to insure roots can re-establish contact with the soil. Repeat this procedure in several other areas of the lawn to locate possible white grub infestations.
