We’re always on the lookout for DID YOU KNOW? Nature’s Houdini: A house mouse can squeeze through a hole the diameter of a dime. Did you know that mice turn up their noses at peppermint? Or that ants and roaches hate Tex-Mex? Some easy tricks and common household ingredients can help keep nature’s nuisances at bay, without harming kids, pets or other wildlife.
Be a Menace to Mice
- Peppermint has been an anti-mouse strategy for centuries. Some swear the strong smell keeps mice from being able to find food. Soak cotton balls in pure peppermint oil (found in health-food stores) and place in small cups near their entry points. Planting peppermint in your yard may help too.
- No cat? Borrow some cat hair from a friend or a groomer, and place it around holes.
- Better yet, block those holes altogether. Stuff them with copper mesh, which won’t rust like steel wool. Cover larger openings and the space behind air vents with hardware cloth that has a mesh size less than a quarter-inch.
- Ants depend on their scent trail: Wipe it out with undiluted white vinegar.
- They also avoid cayenne pepper. Other pests, including cockroaches and squirrels, avoid it too.
- Ants can’t digest cornmeal, but they don’t know that. Put piles of it near a problem anthill, and ants will eat it and slowly starve. This solution takes some time, but it’s safe for kids and pets.
Banish Biting Bugs
- Mosquitoes track you by the carbon dioxide you exhale. Mask it with citronella. Lemongrass (not the citronella plant) is the source of this oil. Plant this lovely ornamental around your patio or in portable pots.
- Bedbugs don’t like extremes. Chill a room at 32°F or below for several days to stop these pests cold. And wash and dry bedding at the hottest settings for at least 15 minutes. You can also set the legs of your bed in plastic cups filled with a little mineral oil, to keep bugs from climbing up.
- Many insects go toward the light. But bugs avoid yellow bug lights—use them near doorways, driveways and sidewalks. Place mercury vapor or incandescent lights around the perimeter of the property to lure insects away.

If you’ve heard gnawing, squeaking, or scampering recently in your home. You probably have a house guest, a common mouse. Other rodents make their way inside, but distinctive characteristics of mice include gnaw marks on wood, plastic, or cardboard; fecal droppings 1/8 to ¼ inch long; musky odor; or body run marks along baseboards or insulation (Run marks are left behind by the dirty, oily body of a mouse repeatedly running back and forth along an established trail).
It is important to rid your home of these uninvited guests and ensure that your home is not hospitable or easily accessible to them in the future. House mice are not pets. Mice transmit diseases, cause fires by chewing electrical wiring, and mice ruin food, papers, storage boxes, woodwork, and insulation with gnawing, urine, and droppings. Lenny’s Pest Control is an expert in the extermination of these unwanted house guests. We have years of experience and know just what to do to get the job done right the first time around! We’ve put together some important information on mice and rodents for you below.
Identify Your Problem
To begin eliminating your rodent problems, start with a good inspection. Inspecting your home, shed or barn is important for determining which type of rodents are present: rats or mice. A good inspection provides three main valuable pieces of information:
- Type of Infestation
- Extent of Infestation
- Location for Control Effort
Fecal pellets are the most commonly encountered sign in a rodent inspection and serve as primary evidence to confirm an infestation. Even a small population of mice can produce literally thousands of droppings in a short period of time. Examining the droppings can serve as evidence of an infestation and may help you identify your type of infestation.
- Quantity: 50 to 75 pellets daily
- Size: ¼ inch long
- Shape: Small with 1 or both ends pointed
- Quantity: 40 to 50 pellets daily
- Size: ¾ inch long
- Shape: Larger, rectangular with blunt ends
- Found in small groups
- Quantity: 40 to 50 pellets daily
- Size: ½ inch long
- Shape: Larger, curved, sausage-shaped with pointed ends
- Found scattered
Fresh droppings are dark in color and soft in texture, but after three days they harden and lose the dark color. Age of droppings will tell you if your rodent problem is current.
Size of Infestation
This one is pretty simple – the more droppings you have…the larger your infestation, which will help you determine your approach for rat control.
Rodent Prevention Tips –
As far as your home is concerned, mice and rats look for the basics: food, water and shelter. Below are a few tips to rodent-proof your home and keep these annoying critters from thinking your home is their home.
- Cover trash cans with snug, metal lids (mice can gnaw through plastic).
- Store pet & bird food in tightly sealed glass or metal containers.
- Elevate your compost container at least 1 foot off the ground.
- Pick up around fruit trees so fallen fruit or nuts don’t remain on the ground.
- Clean up your garage tightly contain lawn seed, tulip bulbs and bone meal.
Remove opportunities for shelter
- Inspect your house for broken windows, damaged sills or siding and foundation cracks.
- Seal or screen over gaps around pipes and stove, dryer and foundation vents.
- Install flashing to keep pests from climbing up your siding and getting into the attic.
- Eliminate hiding places by removing ivy, trimming shrubs and bushes off the ground and away from the home foundation and elevating firewood.
A lot of devices and poisons have been introduced in order to exterminate rodents, but some of these may pose more problems in the future. To ensure complete victory over mice and rodents, you should hire an exterminator, such as Lenny’s Pest Control, to get rid of mice. We know everything about house rodents and the proper and effective ways to get rid of them for good!
Once you have rid your home of rodents, clean up around the house. A clean home is a less hospitable environment. Use plastic storage crates instead of boxes. Take newspapers to the recycling bin on a weekly basis. Keep woodpiles away from the house. Keep brush and debris swept, raked and cleaned. If your home looks like a mouse nest, it may very well be one.

The Holiday’s are either your favorite time of year or the time you dread most… it’s all really a matter of perspective I say! Oh, I know what you’re thinking… “Lenny, who doesn’t absolutely LOVE Christmas?” Well ask my neighbor Joe, he has a wife, five kids, two dogs and a cat with a tree full a presents for everyone and the in-laws coming in from out of town. He says he has nothing against the Holidays, it’s his wallet that really dislikes this time of year with all the extra spending. Of course even the dogs and cat just have to have new toys to open up on Christmas day! Really? Yes!, pet lovers really buy gifts for their pets too. They are, after all, a part of the family!
So you think Joe should just save up for this time of year and suck it up right? Well that’s kinda what I was thinking but he said the worst of his problems wasn’t really the gifts or the spending… he did, after all, fight the nightmare shopping on black Friday and got most of it out of the way. So I ask, what’s all the Bah Humbug! and sour face about Joe? His response was actually one I hear a lot this time of year, so I should have guessed what was really bothering him.
Well, it’s the in-laws coming in from out of town and staying for a whole two weeks! Yikes and this year aunt Pat and uncle Gene are coming down with them and you know how grumpy she is. Double Yikes! Lenny you know I love family, but the next two weeks of my life will be the most challenging… can I just come over and camp out in your living room?
At this point, I’m wondering… they can’t be that bad, can they? So I ask – What’s the worst that can happen? He sighs, well last year the family left and went to a hotel because Spot, the dog, had fleas and my mother-in-law is allergic. Needless to say, that didn’t go over to well and I heard about it for the next six months! The year before that she swore we had bed bugs and she complained the entire two weeks! Honestly, I’m just afraid of what she’s going to find this year. You know with all the rain and what not, I’ve seen an American Cockroach or two and the last thing I need is to hear her and aunt Pat scaring the living daylights out of Pops and uncle Gene with all the yelling and screaming over a tiny bug. I sprayed that bug spray from the hardware store but I don’t know if I got them all.
And you know how they get to baking and what not this time of year. Well, Suzy found some tiny black bugs in the flour the other day so we had to throw it out and clean out the pantry. I can just imagine the fit they’re going to throw if there’s more where that one came from! What do you call those? Pantry Pests!? Lenny! What am I gonna do? Hide me please!
Joe, really? Is that all your stressing about? Aren’t you the luckiest guy in Cape Coral to have a neighbor that just happens to be a pest control expert? I’ll come over tomorrow and give you a complete interior and exterior pest control home protection! We’ll make sure you don’t have any roaches, pantry pests, ticks, fleas, grubs, mice or termites! Don’t worry my friend, I got you covered! We’ll make sure your home is guest ready and bug free… can’t help you with the other pest problems though – I have my own in-laws to deal with you know! Call us at 239-945-6543 to get your home guest ready and pest free today!

Help! I have a Mouse in my House!
Now that’s a line I hear more often than I’d like to! The other day I got a call from a client (let’s just call her Suzy) that told me I needed to make a house call to her neighbor right away and check out her attic. She said she was really worried about her neighbor and it was an urgent matter. So I finished up my coffee and headed out to Suzy’s part of town in Fort Myers.
As it turns out Suzy’s neighbor was just about to lose her mind and didn’t know if she should call a doctor or a priest! She hadn’t slept in days and she sure she had a ghost in the house because she heard noises deep into the night, just above her bedroom and the poor lady had convinced herself it was her late husband trying to contact her from the afterlife. Now I’m no ghost hunter, buster or anything like that so I can’t say Yay or Nay about their existence but I can smell a rat in a house if you got one or two… or ten! I’ve been doing this pest control stuff for a long time so I’ve come to see the signs and understand the situation, if you know what I mean!
Well I tell you what, Suzy’s neighbor was lucky she’d gone over crying to Suzy about the nighttime noises because just a few months back I’d gotten a call from Susy’s husband with a similar problem and found a nice size family of rats in their attic and I took care of that problem right away. So Suzy had a pretty good idea of what was really going on at her neighbors house but was having a hard time getting her to understand it was rodents and not her late husband trying to give her some important message from the far and beyond.
Sure enough I climbed up into that attic and found a fine mess up there and now I wished I would have taken a picture so you could see it for yourself! I tell you them creatures were having a happy party up there for a while because it took me and my crew some work to get it all cleaned up and back in order. I’m happy to report that Suzy’s neighbor is sleeping just fine these days and we’re not only checking regularly for rodents but we’re taking care of her termite protection, her lawn and we’re making sure her entire house is totally bug free!
Now here is what you need to know about these unwanted house guests: Commensal Rodents or Pest are a serious problem in the southwest Florida area and most people don’t realize it. They love to live in doors where it’s dry, comfortable and they have lots of food – yours! Rats in the attic are also called roof rats but there are several kinds to look out for. You have Deer Mouse, House Mouse, Norway Rat and the Meadow Vole. Commensal pests have been perhaps feared beyond all others down through the ages, as they hit us where it hurts most — in the food supply.
These rats and mice just love to make their home in our homes, farm buildings and warehouses in search of food and shelter. Especially in these rainy months where it’s flooding outside so they have to find a dry place to live. Oh, did I mention they love to climb and they really love food that you leave lying out around your home? The most common rodent pests in Florida are rats and mice because they have adapted well to living with humans. Unknowingly man has carried these pests to every corner of the earth and they have become a common headache for many. These animals consume large quantities of food, they damage structures, clothing and documents that you have stored away for safe keeping. They carry a number of diseases, leave behind their droppings and reproduce at a rate we can’t even begin to want to tell you about.
The good news is that we’re very familiar with these unlikable pests and we know just the right trick to get them out of your living space and far away from your home. Lenny’s Pest Control is licensed and insured and our team of experts has years of experience in exterminating these rodents quickly and safely.
