When is Termite Season Anyway?

Termites in SWFL

When Does Termite Season Start?

Termite season does not have a set beginning and end, as termites are active year round. The season when termites are most visible – through swarms, discarded wings and droppings – coincides roughly with the Major League Baseball season (March to November).

In warmer climates, termites remain consistently active year round. In cooler climates, termites typically are less active during the winter months (November – February). While termites in these areas may slow down during the holidays, their continued activity means that they can cause damage at any time.

Termite Prevention SWFLHow Long Is Termite Season?

The period of time termites are visible depends on where you live. Subterranean termites do not forage for food when the soil is too hot or cold. Depending on which U.S. state you call home, you may experience moderate temperatures for a few months a year – or almost all of the year.

The weather is not the only factor impacting activity. Termite activity also depends on the degree of shelter a colony receives in its nest. Drywood termites located inside a warm home are not as exposed to temperature variations, so seasonal weather changes will not impact them as much. Similarly, subterranean termites may create nests up to 18 inches below ground and away from the cool air, or forage in more protected areas of their nest during the winter. So they are often tucked away from cooler weather and are protected. Any temperature that is somewhat regulated, can provide a perfect place for termites.

When Does Termite Season End?

While termites typically are not visible year round, they can damage your house any month of the year. Regardless of the season or the outside temperature, if you see signs of termite infestation, contact your pest control professional. A trained Termite specialist knows what to look for even in the “off season” of Termites. It is always better to have your home checked periodically, than have to repair costly Termite damage. As you can see from the map below, termite risk is very high in the Florida panhandle.

Tips to Prevent Subterranean Termites

  • Prevent mulch from piling up against the home’s exterior. Mulch beds are generally areas of high moisture, and some mulch can serve as a primary food source. When using mulch, keep a barrier of at least several inches around the home.
  • Remove scrap lumber, boxes, old books and newspapers from crawl spaces. They are edible and may entice termites.
  • Maintain ventilation in crawl spaces. If not, they become ideal nesting sites for termites and other pests.
  • Have your home inspected by a professional at least once a year. Prompt treatment and regular inspections may save thousands of dollars in damage repair.

Termite Solutions Fort MyersFlorida species of Termites

Subterranean termites: The most destructive type, these bugs live in underground colonies and nests can contain more than 1 million termites. To travel above ground, they build dirt-like tunnels to shield them from predators and the weather. Inside a home, they will devour wood, furniture, drywall and even books.

Formosan termites: A non-native species, they arrived on warships returning from World War II. Infestations include Florida and 10 other states so far. They also live underground, but their colonies are much larger, often with millions. Because of their extreme size, Formosan colonies can cause more damage in a shorter period of time.

Drywood termites: Unlike their cousins, they don’t nest in the soil or build “shelter tubes.” They establish small colonies in dry, sound wood. As drywood termites eat, they produce small fecal pellets that look like sawdust around the home.

Termites: How to Reduce Your Home’s Risk of Infestation

termite swflTermites are the most economically important wood-destroying organism in the United States, with approximately $2 billion per year being spent for their prevention and treatment. This high-dollar amount could be reduced if homeowners implemented a number of relatively simple, inexpensive, practical measures around their home and outlying structures that reduce the risk of subterranean termite infestations. Such preventive measures are very cost-effective given that a home typically represents one’s largest monetary investment.

Many construction and landscaping features literally can invite termites into one’s home. An awareness of basic termite biology and habits can help you understand the necessity of certain prevention measures. The goal is to recognize and alter conditions around one’s home so as to reduce the termites’ environmental requirements for moisture, food (wood), and shelter.

termite prevention Bonita Springs

Termite Biology and Habits

subterranean termite Bonita SpringsIn many parts of the United States, subterranean termites are the most common type of termites that infest homes. These termites need moisture to survive. They are closely associated with the soil, where they typically construct an underground nest or a series of interconnected nests, hence the name “subterranean termites.” The termites excavate narrow tunnels through the soil, creating a network through which they can travel very long distances (hundreds of feet or more) to reach food. They also transport soil above ground to construct mud tubes (shelter tubes) and to line their feeding galleries in wood. Soil serves as a source of moisture that helps protect termites from the drying effects of air. It also shields termites from predators (ants, birds, lizards, etc.) that feed on them.

Cellulose (especially wood) is the main food source for subterranean termites. In nature, termites feed on dead wood, including roots and stumps. Around homes, termites readily feed on wood mulch used in landscaping. However, any type of mulch provides termites with needed moisture and protection from the elements. In homes, termites often first attack wood that is located close to the soil (i.e., lower parts of the house). They then can follow the framework of the house to gain access to upper levels and floors. As they feed, they excavate galleries in the wood. Termites also can tunnel through inedible materials such as foam insulation, plaster board, etc. as they search for food.

Termite Solutions Bonita Springs

Do not unknowingly invite termites into your home!

Employ any of the following measures to help disrupt the termites’ ability to locate moisture, food (wood), and shelter.

Solutions to Termite-Conducive Situations

Problem: Cellulose (wood, dead plant material, paper, etc.) in contact with soil provides termites with ready and unobservable access to food.

Solutions:

  • Keep all wooden parts of the house foundation at least 6 inches above the soil.
  • Keep mulch levels several inches below the siding and wooden parts of the structure.
  • Avoid or minimize use of wood mulch next to the foundation.
  • Remove dead trees, stumps, and roots near the structure.
  • Never store firewood, lumber, or paper against the foundation or in the crawl space.
  • Remove wood debris and form boards.

Problem: Moisture accumulation near the foundation provides water needed for termite survival.

Solutions:

  • Grade or slope soil away from the foundation.
  • Divert rain water away from the foundation.
  • Maintain clean gutters and down-spouts.
  • Install down-spout extenders and splash blocks.
  • Use drain tiles if site is flat.
  • Divert lawn sprinklers and irrigation water away from the foundation.
  • Promptly repair leaking faucets, water pipes, and air conditioning units.
  • Use mulch sparingly (no more than 2 inches depth is recommended).
  • Keep plants and ground covers 3-4 feet away from the house foundation.

Problem: Poor ventilation in crawl space provides water needed for termite survival.

Solutions:

  • Cover approximately 75 percent of the soil surface in the crawl space with a vapor barrier (4-6 ml polyethylene sheeting).
  • Install 1 square foot of vent opening per 300 to 500 square feet of crawl space area (when using a vapor barrier).
  • Install 1 square foot of vent opening per 150 square feet of crawl space area (without a vapor barrier).
  • Enhance cross ventilation.
  • Remove any vegetation covering vents.

Problem: Hidden termite access.

Solutions:

  • Install trellises and trim plants so that they do not contact the house.
  • Do not build flower planters against the house.
  • Regularly inspect cracks or joints in concrete slabs for evidence of termites.
  • Install metal flashing when attaching porches or decks (even when using “treated” lumber) to an existing house.
  • Remove mulch that contacts siding or obscures a clear view of the foundation.
  • Never install foam board insulation (polystyrene) below grade.

Annual Inspection Checklist

  • Water is directed away from the foundation.
  • Wood and other cellulose materials (including mulch) are away from the foundation.
  • The foundation is exposed around the entire house.
  • The basement (or crawl space) is relatively dry.

Pest Protection that Matters!

At Lenny’s Pest Control, we’re all about offering you the home protection that matters! We have years of experience and we understand what’s going on in and around your home. We have tackled just about every pest, bug and rodent there is out there and we’ve explored the options and have discovered what works and what doesn’t! This time of year we want to stress the importance of Termite Protection and Prevention. The amount of damage that termites can do to a home is devastating but it doesn’t have to happen – we can prevent it. Below is some information we found that we believe you will find useful in knowing what to look out for.

More on Termites:

A termite feeds mostly on wood, but can also get into paper, books, insulation, and other areas of the home. Termites can harm living trees, but they more commonly attack woody plants that are already in decline. Besides the obvious economic damage it causes, an infestation can also be a significant emotional strain. For this reason, termite control is essential. And since it is so complex and difficult a task, getting to these pests and eradicating them from a home is normally a task best left to trained experts in the field.

Did you know that termites start colonies in the Spring?

While a termite infestation can happen at any time during the year, colonies often gather in the spring, when the weather is getting warmer and there is plenty of rain. It is during this season that the largest numbers of these winged swarmers get into homes. If you find a winged termite inside your home, it’s usually a sign of an infestation and time to call Lenny for termite control services. Those you might find that have emerged indoors are best dealt with by simply vacuuming them up. However, it is the ones feeding on the structure of your home that you really have to worry about.

Between the months of March and May especially, these swarmers tend to drop to the ground, pair off with a mate, and attempt to start a new colony in the soil. Relatively few of them emerging outdoors end up surviving. Swarmers that emerge indoors are equally unlikely to survive; even so, their presence points to trouble elsewhere in and around the home. To get the situation under control, you first need to know where they are getting in. And then you have to figure out how to control them or get rid of the colony. The complexity of the job calls for a termite control professional.

How will I know if my home is infested? One of the most visible indicators of a termite problem is pencil-wide mud foraging tubes extending over foundation walls, support piers, sill plates, floor joists, headers and subfloors. Termites construct these “shelter tubes” from particles of soil as they travel between their underground colonies and the structure. Termite-damaged wood is usually hollowed out along the grain, with bits of dried mud or soil lining the feeding galleries. Wood damaged by moisture or other types of insects (e.g. carpenter ants) will not have this appearance.

There will often be no sign of the termites themselves-small, creamy-white insects with an “ant-like” appearance. An infestation can go undetected for years, hidden behind drywall, paneling, floor coverings, insulation or other obstructions. Termite feeding can even progress undetected in wood that is exposed, because the outer surface is usually left intact. Detecting an infestation often requires the trained eye of a professional inspector. However, even the most experienced inspector can overlook damage that is hidden.

Another visible sign of infestation is the presence of winged termites emerging indoors or from the building exterior. Termite swarmers have a dark body and are attracted to light and may be seen around windows, doors and light fixtures. They can be differentiated from winged ants by their straight antennae, uniform waist and wings of equal size. Ants have elbowed antennae, constricted waists and forewings that are longer that the hind wings.

Will the swarmers emerging indoors damage my house? No. In nature, termites swarm to disperse and start new colonies. At certain times of the year, especially on warm days after a rain, winged “reproductives” emerge from the colony and fly into the air. The swarmers then drop to the ground, pair off with a mate and attempt to begin a new colony in the soil. Very few swarmers emerging outdoors survive to initiate new colonies. Termite swarmers emerging inside a structure almost never survive, but indicate that an infestation is present. The swarmer termites and their shed wings can be removed with a vacuum cleaner. Swarmers emerging from tree stumps, wood piles and other outdoor locations away from the house are not necessarily cause for concern, and do not mean that the building is infested.

Can I treat the house myself? Ridding a home of termites requires extensive knowledge of building construction and understanding of where termites are likely to enter. Many of these potential entry points are hidden and difficult to access. Termite control also requires specialized training in the installation of an interception and/or baiting systems as well as the proper use of supplemental treatments that may be employed, such as liquid chemical barriers, foams and wood protectants. Given the substantial financial investment of one’s home, termite treatment is a job for professionals. We’re here to help you make sure you home is safe from termites so feel free to give us a call and schedule an inspection.

What about Termite Bait Systems? There are several ways to approach Termite control and prevention. We can use liquids, termite bait systems, or both of these. Liquid Termite spray products are primarily fast acting and can be applied closer to the infestation area and they also require less maintenance. On the other hand the Termite Bait Systems are considered to be less intrusive because no drilling or trenching are needed for these. Also it doesn’t require expensive equipment to complete the job. It’s important to note that bait systems can also help you identify a problem before the termites reach your home and with termites – prevention is always key.

The best way to prevent and control termites is to pick up the phone and give us a call. Let the experts at Lenny’s Pest Control handle all your termite protection needs!
